Liu Kang:
Dragon:
History: Orphaned at a very young age, Liu Kang was raised by Shaolin monks, who taught him the way of the spiritual warrior. They soon recognized his potential as a contender for the Mortal Kombat tournament and rigorously trained him for this task. Raiden, too, understood that Liu Kang was Earthrealm's best hope for freedom and introduced him to Master Bo' Rai Cho to further his development. Once fully trained, Liu Kang bested all challengers and earned the high honor of representing the Shaolin in the Mortal Kombat tournament. He and Raiden then embarked on their fateful journey to Shang Tsung's island to compete in this pivotal kontest.
Though Liu Kang starts out as Raiden's protege and as a hero, the relationship between mentor and protege becomes increasingly strained as he watches Raiden continually fail in his duties as protector of Earthrealm. The first crack appears after Kung Lao's death at the hands of Outworld's ruler, Shao Kahn.
He accompanies Raiden to see the Elder Gods. They try to convince the Elder Gods to stop Shao Kahn, but the Elder Gods refuse to intervene. After returning from their meeting with the Elder Gods, they find to see most of the Earthrealm warriors killed off at Sindel's hands (Nightwolf sacrifices himself to stop Sindel's rampage, while Kitana lays mortally wounded). Kitana dies while holding Liu Kang's hand, and the Mortal Kombat champion becomes convinced that Raiden is slowly losing his grip on sanity; the fact that the thunder god sought Quan Chi's aid further strains this relationship.
After Raiden returns from the Netherrealm, finally correctly deciphering in what he must do to prevent Armageddon in the future. Liu Kang, being told that Shao Kahn must succeed in conquering Earthrealm, becomes enraged that the God of Thunder has lost it and attacks him out of anger. Raiden is forced to defend himself, but in the process, accidentally injures Liu Kang with an lightning blast. The thunder god, aghast at what has happened, desperately begs Liu Kang to forgive him, but even in his dying breaths, the former champion curses Raiden for his failures.
Remade as a Revenant, Liu Kang was reborn fueled by his hatred of Raiden and filled with desire to see Shinnok's will done. As time went on Liu Kang achieved many victories and caught Shinnok's eye. Wary of having such a man under Quan Chi's rule, and wanting an agent he could trust, he liberated Liu Kang from Quan Chi's ranks and made him a General. He got to pick a servant from his fellow revenants and, as if to mock Quan Chi's pursuit of Bi-Han in times past, picked Smoke. Now the two enact Shinnok's will directly, and Liu Kang has made many new allies. First among them, the long thought dead brother of Goro, Duroc. Seeing a fellow seeker of revenge in the Shokan Prince, Liu Kang has promised this awesome warrior much in exchange for his aide, including the head of Goro himself.
Equipment: He wields the Dragon sword, a wavy bladed sword that was a gift for him for beating Shang Tsung at the Tournament and a pair on nunchucku.
Powers: Liu Kang has proven himself to be one of the most powerful characters in the six realms of his reality, emerging victorious from every Mortal Kombat tournament he's been involved in. Liu Kang possesses incredible agility, acrobatic skill and martial arts, though the latter is more common. These skills were developed during his training with Bo' Rai Cho, who also taught Kang the Flying Kick technique. It is suggested that Kang meditates regularly in order to keep increasing strength as well as maintain it. Due to his recurring status as the Mortal Kombat champion, Liu Kang hardly seems to age.
Liu Kang is commonly associated with the element of fire, which comes in the form of shooting firebound projectiles. He appears to have some degree of control over it as the fireballs sometimes form dragon-like shapes, and has even used the element for finishers as well. Kang also appears to possess a degree of shapeshifting, able to transform himself into a Chinese dragon which includes a serpentine body with small arms. The form is also revealed to have fire-breathing capabilities, most likely associated with his ability to use fire.
Liu Kang is shown to be able to manipulate his Yin and Yang energies through an art he dubbed the Dualist style, firing searing hot blasts of light in his Yin state along with healing properties while firing dark energy blasts and strengthening himself through his Yang state. This has gotten stronger as a Revenant.
He has also been shown to be able to summon Arcade Machines to crush people.
As a Revenant he has shown to be able to possess people and make them kill themselves by controlling their bodies. He is also strong enough to bisect a man using just his legs and even turn into fire and incinerate his foes.
Skills: He is skilled in the following fighting styles: Karate, Jeet Kun Do, Jun Fan, Pao Chui, Choy Lai Fut as well as Monkey and Dragon style Kung Fu.
Weaknesses: Liu Kang is arrogant. He truly believes he is unbeatable. The true champion of Mortal Kombat through and through, and while he is capable of a great many things, his arrogant can sometimes be blinding, and when coupled with his desire for revenge against Raiden, this can prove dangerous for him.
Trivia:
- Liu Kang is a good dancer, likely learning the ability to improve his agility.
- He is also good with shadow puppets.
- As he turns into a Dragon, and as he sees him as an equal, Liu Kang considers Duroc a brother in arms.
