Mary Batson:
History: Mary Batson and her twin brother Billy were both nursed by a woman named Sarah Primm. When the Batson twins were orphaned after their parents died in a car accident, Primm substituted Mary for the baby girl of another family she nursed for, who had suddenly died, and sent Billy to an orphanage.
Over a decade after his parents’ death, Billy was an on-air reporter for WHIZ Radio, hosting a quiz bowl with three young contestants. During a commercial break, Billy received an urgent letter from Sarah Primm requesting his presence. He immediately went to see the dying woman, who told Billy about his twin sister, and gave him a locket broken in half. Mary, Primm told Billy before dying, wore the other half of the locket.
After the quiz bowl broadcast was over, Billy recalled that one of the contestants, Mary Bromfield, wore a broken locket, and he and his best friend Freddy Freeman trailed Mary’s limousine in their super-powered forms of Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr.. Before making it home, Mary was kidnapped for ransom, prompting the two Marvels to intervene, save her, and knock out the kidnappers.
Captain Marvel then learned that Mary's locket matched his own, and that she was indeed Billy’s sister. The Marvels revealed their secret identities to Mary, who wondered if, since she is Billy’s twin, she could become a Marvel by saying the magic word "Shazam." Billy, however, was assured that “Old Shaz—er—you know who—wouldn’t give his powers to a girl!”
Just then, the kidnappers awakened and gagged Billy and Freddy, preventing them from saying their magic words. “Oh no,” exclaimed Mary, "Billy can't say 'Shazam!'" Just after inadvertently saying the word, a magic lightning bolt struck Mary Bromfield, and she was transformed into a super-powered version of herself. She then defeated the thugs by herself and freed Freddy and her brother.
Mary's super-powered self, christened "Mary Marvel" by her brother, wore a red short-sleeved blouse and red skirt, lined with gold trim, and including a lightning bolt insignia and "a cape—just like Captain Marvel’s!” According to the wizard Shazam, Mary could transform into a Marvel because her “Shazam” powers were not derived from the male mythological figures who empowered Billy, but from a set of female benefactors.
Since Mary was once again parentless, Dudley H. Dudley adopted her so she could live with Billy. He even does off to help them as Uncle Marvel, though he only has power for a single fight. Mary has joined the Young Justice Team because she felt her kind of power was needed to help her friends there.
Equipment: None.
Powers: Mary’s powers come from a different group of gods than Billy’s. Mary’s powers are from a group of goddesses (these are depicted as goddesses even though all are not – Zephyrus is a male, and Hippolyate is not divine):
Selena, who gives her Divine Grace, which is the inactive ability to contain a certain amount of finesse and elegance pervading all of their actions. These gifts allow Mary to judge a situation in an unbiased manner, dodge bullets and other projectiles without the appearance of significant effort. One who has divine grace might be said to have the luck of the gods on their side. She also grants Mary enhanced durability, strong enough to take blows head on from Black Adam.
Hippolyta, for great Strength worthy of the mother of Wonder woman, Mary's might is comparable to that of the Amazonian Princess herself.
Ariadne, who imparts Skill in battle a great tactical analysis, allowing her to be coming up with plans that even amaze Billy at time.
Zephyrus, who gives her Fleetness on land and air, letting her fly and run as fast as her brother.
Aurora, who grants Beauty, which seems to allow Mary to charm weak minded foes with her good looks. Not that she needs much help turning heads...
Minerva, for bestowing Wisdom from the Goddess of Wisdom herself. This combined with the tactical skill of Ariande makes Mary sometimes the more wiser of the Marvel sibling, often acting as a planner, voice of reason and a strong sounding board. Not that Mary herself isn't as sharp as a whip, but it helps.
Also like her brother she can weaponize her transformation lightning bolt to hit her foes, though it lacks the power of her Brother's as she has a direct tie to Zeus' might.
Skills: Aside from the skills noted from the god, Mary is a top student and is very observant.
Weaknesses: Like her brother uttering the word Shazam can trigger her change if the bolt hits her.
Trivia:
- She has begun seeing Freddy Freeman officially.
- She is still being stalked by Devilwing.
- She is not going to Midtown High.
